Mama Called The Doctor Book Review
However, I was recently able to review Antoinette Ramona's Book, Mama Called The Doctor: A Mother & Child's Final Journey and I have to say this book has probably impacted me more than anything I have read in recently months.
Thank you to Christa Sheffield at Mom Entrepeneurs for sending me a complimentary copy of Mama Called The Doctor in exchange for me reading it and providing a review.
About The Book:
Mama Called the Doctor is the poignant memoir of a suburban stay-at-home Mom, who at the age of thirty-eight, became pregnant with her fourth child and began her unbelievable journey from personal tragedy and heartache to self-acceptance and peace.
Antoinette Romana was living a dream life with her husband Angelo and three children when she received a shocking phone call from her doctor after her amniocentesis. Her precious baby had Down syndrome, and Antoinette and her husband had just four days to make an agonizing decision that would ultimately change their lives forever. Antoinette details her conversations with family members who backed her with unwavering support and also her dialogue with the doctors and counselors who shared their honest, sometimes emotionless feedback as she and Angelo bravely faced a difficult situation head-on with great strength, faith in God, and an unwavering love for each other.
Antoinette shares her openly honest and heartfelt story of survival with the hope that in reaching out, she will help those who have traveled on the same journey know that they are not alone.
My Review:
Mama Called The Doctor is a heartbreaking story of a mother who has to say goodbye to her child, before its even born.
As a mom, I cannot imagine having to make the agonizing decision of terminating a pregnancy that Romana and her husband did.
I was in tears for much of the book due to the sensitive nature of the subject, but I applaud Romana for telling her story. As my education background includes some counselling courses, I know how important expressing feelings during a crisis is for healing.
I know that Antoinette Romana not only succeeded in healing but through her book, I hope that many women will also begin their journey of healing from the crisis of abortion, and serious illness/disability of a child.
One thing that really stands out about Mama Called The Doctor is how well Romana expressed how her husband dealt with the crisis. You don't often hear the male perspective when a woman has to deal with finding out her unborn child has a serious health problem.
It was refreshing to see this. Especially how they dealt with the crisis individually and as a couple. The crisis of a sick child can very easily tear a marriage apart, no matter how strong it is to begin with. I was pleasantly surprised to see how Romana and her husband worked through the crisis and were pillars of strength for one another.
I also really appreciated the rawness with which Romana wrote. I felt like I was right in the room, a fly on the wall, and experiencing everything she did. It was wonderful to see the progression in her journey. Though her child is gone, he will never be forgotten, and though they move on with life, he will always be a part of it.
I was once again reminded that when we go through a crisis, no matter what the crisis is, there is a reason, and we will get through it with support of family, friends and our faith in God. He is the ultimate comforter and healer. Throughout reading Mama Called The Doctor I was once again reminded that "God's ways are not our ways, His Thoughts are not ours".
This is not an easy read due to the subject matter, but is a quick read. I was able to read it in about 2 days. In fact, I have read it twice. This book will be especially encouraging to any family that has had to deal with a sick child or make the same agonizing decision that Antoinette and her husband did.
I recommend this book as a must read for all!
